Automatic Segregation of Pelagic Habitats

چکیده

It remains difficult to segregate pelagic habitats since structuring processes are dynamic on a wide range of scales and clear boundaries in the open ocean non-existent. However, improve our knowledge about existing ecological niches shaping enormous diversity marine plankton, we need better understanding driving forces behind plankton patchiness. Here describe new machine-learning method detect quantify based hydrographic measurements. An Autoencoder learns two-dimensional, meaningful representations higher-dimensional micro-habitats, which characterized by variety biotic abiotic measurements from high-speed ROTV. Subsequently, apply density-based clustering algorithm group similar micro-habitats into associated macro-habitats German Bight North Sea. Three distinct macro-habitats, “surface mixed layer,” “bottom an exceptionally “productive layer” consistently identified, each with its community. We provide evidence that model detects relevant features like doming thermocline within Offshore Wind Farm or presence tidal mixing front.

Fate of heterotrophic microbes in pelagic habitats: focus on populations.

Major biogeochemical processes in the water columns of lakes and oceans are related to the activities of heterotrophic microbes, e.g., the mineralization of organic carbon from photosynthesis and allochthonous influx or its transport to the higher trophic levels. During the last 15 years, cultivation-independent molecular techniques have substantially contributed to our understanding of the div...

Essential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran

Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries, and are distributed along the entire length of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters. Using small pelagic fisheries logbook, a GIS-based environmental modelling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of an...

Modelling the oceanic habitats of two pelagic species using recreational fisheries data

Defining the oceanic habitats of migratory marine species is important for both single species and ecosystem-based fisheries management, particularly when the distribution of these habitats vary temporally. This can be achieved using species distribution models that include physical environmental predictors. In the present study, species distribution models that describe the seasonal habitats o...

The remarkable squidworm is an example of discoveries that await in deep-pelagic habitats.

An intriguing new annelid, Teuthidodrilus samae (Annelida, Cirratuliformia) gen. and sp. nov., was observed and collected during deep-water column exploration of the western Celebes Sea. The Celebes Sea is a deep pocket basin, effectively isolated from surrounding deep water, and is part of the Coral Triangle, a focal area for conservation because of its high diversity and unique geological his...
